Nonprofits are under more pressure than ever. Federal funding is shrinking. State and local budgets are tight. Donors are stretched. Yet community needs keep growing. This is a defining moment for our sector — one that calls for courage, creativity, and collaboration. After decades of working with mission-driven organizations, I’ve seen one truth again and again: Tough times can create the best opportunities for change. When we face challenges together, we find new ways to lead, innovate, and serve. That’s why conversations about mergers and partnerships matter more than ever.
In this series on nonprofit mergers and acquisitions, we will dig into how organizations can strategically adapt in a changing landscape, improve their internal and external communications in times of change, and create brand continuity that maintains their identity. To start, here are four mindset shifts nonprofits should adopt in their strategies during difficult times.
Every Merger Is a Multiplier
Mergers present an opportunity to grow stronger. They enable us to pool resources, combine expertise, and serve more people and communities. Think of a merger as a multiplier: More minds solving problems together. More mission driving impact. More momentum to serve communities more effectively.
The myth that mergers mean “shrinking” is outdated. It’s about joining forces to double our impact and halve the obstacles. With consolidation, we aren’t contracting—we’re building new capacity, new community, and fresh collaborations to serve our neighbors, clients, and causes.
Lead With Courage and Optimism
None of this is easy. There are real fears about how a merger might affect staff, legacy, or donors. Optimism is not just positive thinking. It represents strategic courage backed by results. Over 25 years, I’ve seen nonprofits turn “tough exits” into new beginnings where missions live on and legacies are honored. I’ve witnessed boards rallying not out of desperation, but out of a clear-eyed belief that together, they could rise above challenges and make real change.
Break Down Barriers, Build Abundance
The current funding squeeze can be a call to action. Cuts at the federal, state, and local levels mean we need to break down our own barriers and silos. We need to adopt an abundance mindset, amplifying every resource we have, and celebrating every expansion and alliance that helps us reach farther. So, I challenge every nonprofit leader, every board member, every funder in our community to use this period of challenge to build resilience, optimism, and shared success. Assume abundance, not scarcity. Multiply your impact.
People and Culture Make It Work
Success isn’t just about strategy or spreadsheets. It’s about people, trust, and culture. As the popular adage goes, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” To make mergers work, we must listen deeply, respect each organization’s legacy, and build a shared future with intention. This is our moment to lead with courage. By joining forces, we can serve more people, create lasting change, and shape the next chapter for our sector.
Let’s not retreat — let’s go further, together.
