The James Irvine Foundation

Full Court Press was asked by The James Irvine Foundation, one of California's largest foundations, to generate awareness of a report on a sensitive issue in the state's philanthropic world.

The report highlighted large philanthropic disparities between the coasts, the inland empire and central valley. The challenge was to package its dense and previously-available content in an effective and aggressive way without calling other foundations to task.

Full Court Press' expertise in raising the profile of complex and media-unfriendly material would be tested by the project. In collaboration with Irvine's communications team, Full Court Press conducted a comprehensive media analysis and message development process. This yielded a compelling message that was also relevant on a local level across the state. Full Court Press targeted dozens of reporters who had written on philanthropic trends and community foundations and also lined up local community foundation CEO's as sources -- who in turn would lead reporters to selected local programs.

The result was a statewide success on both coverage and message. The story appeared in more than a dozen daily newspapers including the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Sacramento Bee, San Jose Mercury News, San Diego Union Tribune, as well as in business weeklies, philanthropic publications, and on television and radio. The messaging was so strong that it was consistently echoed in quotes by other foundations not affiliated with the report or the James Irvine Foundation.
